Digital Photography Guidelines
Photo CD's
• include a thumbnail sheet
• unless the scans are made with a drum or flex-tight scanner we will need an original
slide or print for publication
• If you want the CD returned include a S.A.S.E, that the CD will fit into.

Emailing Photos
• Only send 5x7 72 dpi images for review
• It's better to post images on a web site for us to view

Taking Digital Photos
• Only images shot at 300 dpi 11 x 17 in. will be considered for publication
• Never resize in Photoshop

Exposure and Parting Shot Submissions
Exposure is a gallery-style section devoted to showcasing exceptionally engaging photography and its creators.

Parting Shot, the last image in the magazine, is a signature page that highlights a single image with a humorous twist.

Include a S.A.S.E. if you want the material returned and please make sure the material fits in the return envelope. Allow 60 days for your submission to be returned.

Outside is a monthly national magazine dedicated to covering the people, sports and activities, politics, art, literature, and hardware of the outdoors. We rely on regular contributors for many images, but we are always open to innovative work that creatively reflects the essence of the magazine.

Submission Guidelines
All submissions are for publication only. Your images will be held until after the issue goes to press (usually 45 days) and returned by FedEx Air. Please note: FedEx declines coverage for photographs, no matter what amount of insurance is purchased. Therefore by submitting images to Outside magazine and Mariah Media you waive your right to hold us responsible for loss or damage of photographs being returned to you.

All images must be labeled with your name and include caption information.

Submissions are accepted after the deadline but we will have started editing and cannot give them full consideration.

If your work is published in Outside magazine you will receive a Purchase Order asking you to invoice us. A selection of the images published in Outside magazine will also be reused in the online edition of the magazine. If your work is published on Outside Online you will receive a separate purchase order from Away.com (our online partner) in Washington DC.
